We can also work around any restrictions, such as injuries, or dietary needs. Meltdown is our famous fat loss programme, which will make sure you get the results you want.
The Meltdown fat loss programme began when Nick Mitchell, our founder, was working with athletes at the University of London. They were generally very lean and had strong, toned physiques, despite avoiding the low intensity ‘fat burning’ workouts that were so popular at the time. Instead, their training was focused on explosive strength and power. As a side effect, they developed great physiques that turned heads, even though body composition and fat loss was not their primary goal.
Over fifteen years Nick gradually fine-tuned the Meltdown programme, putting hundreds of trainers and clients through their paces. That in-gym experience has been combined with university research and input from some of the world’s best coaches, like Charles Poliquin. We use Poliquin’s BioSignature Modulation protocols and combine them with our own expertise, providing you with a tailored programme which, if you follow it and work hard in the gym, will get you the results you are after. We see an average fat loss of 18lbs over the first six to twelve weeks.

So why is our approach so effective?

1. We stay up to date.

Many magazine articles and personal trainers are based on outmoded practices. They rarely experiment, and ignore the implications that scientific advances have on their training. In contrast, here at UP we are constantly innovating and experimenting. It means we have a huge bag of tricks to use with each client, and can select the approach that is most suitable for you.

2. We are efficient

Our clients are at the top of their professions. They are often pushed for time, and struggle to find even three to five hours a week to train. We always aim to maximise the efficiency of your workout by working hard. At UP, we never let clients sit on a stationary bike or treadmill for hours at a time. We understand your goals, and then will plan a training regime that will get you there in the most time-efficient manner.

3. We know results come from what happens when you’re not in the gym

Not only is our in-gym training effective, it also helps burn calories after you’ve left. Traditional workouts, like running long distances at a steady pace, burn a lot of calories whilst you do them. However, when you stop training, your metabolism returns to normal.

With our workouts, your metabolism remains elevated throughout the day. Our high intensity training methods mean you will continue to burn fat up to 38 hours after you leave the gym. Clients regularly tell us that they are super hungry, and feel a bit ‘light on their feet’ after they’ve left the gym. This is a great sign that your metabolism is running at full pelt as a result of your workout.

4. We use weights

Many personal trainers shy away from using free weights. They often lack the knowledge to use them effectively, and are unable to coach proper form and technique.

However, using resistance training is one of the best ways to burn fat. Here at UP, we devote hours to teaching our PTs how to coach proper form and technique. We then use weights in our training sessions to ramp up your metabolism whilst still retaining muscle.

5. We love food.

Losing fat doesn’t mean starving yourself. It means eating the right things. We give you nutritional guidelines, tailored to your lifestyle, that will support your training and get you closer to your goals.

What does the 6 week Meltdown fat loss programme consist of?

Consultation and BioSignature Assessment

We use BioSignature and a 12-site skinfold test to identify the problem areas where you store fat the most. BioSignature was developed by Charles Poliquin, internationally renowned Olympic Strength & Conditioning coach. It means we can tailor your programme to address your unique hormonal issues.
We also ask all clients to complete an extremely detailed questionnaire about their lifestyle, eating habits, stress levels and previous training experience. This means we can tailor the Meltdown fat loss programme to your unique situation.
We will look at your overall body composition. We will calculate your body fat and take measurements of your waist, hips etc.
Finally, we will assess your movement patterns and identify muscular imbalances, structural problems and assess your overall posture. We look at a series of movements such as lunges, squats and leg raises. This means we can ensure our training sessions will be pitched at the right level of difficulty for you.

Nutritional Assessment

Before you begin training, we will ask you to keep a complete, honest food diary for a week.
We will then use this as a basis for a new set of dietary guidelines. These are designed to fit around your lifestyle and any restrictions you might have. Many of our clients have very hectic and stressful schedules, so we will give you advice that makes sure no matter what happens you can continue to progress towards your goals. Where relevant and necessary, we will also recommend supplements to further support your goals.

Fat Loss Exercise programme design

We will then combine all that personal information with our own learning, and tailor our unique Meltdown fat loss programme to fit your goals. Our training programmes will push you hard, as results rarely come easy. They will also be designed to get progressively more challenging as you get fitter, lose fat, and improve your mobility and capacity to work. We particularly aim to address any muscular and structural imbalances early on, so these do not restrict your progress.

Training sessions

On your Meltdown programme you will meet with your Personal Trainer three times a week for twelve weeks. We may also give you additional ‘homework’ in the form of additional exercises and regimes to perform at home.
We believe that form and technique are extremely important, so will carefully coach you through the movements. This ensures you are always training safely. We will also track your progress in terms of strength, repetitions and overall fitness.
Fat Loss

What do we expect from you?

We are very proud of our reputation, and therefore very particular about whom we take on as clients. We ask that you commit to several guidelines:
i. Prepare to give up alcohol and processed food for at least the first two weeks of your Meltdown fat loss programme

ii. Follow the 90-10 rule. We will dictate 90% of your food intake and training programme, which needs to be followed by you precisely. The remaining 10% remains in your hands – and your conscience.

iii. Work hard, giving 100% in your workouts and never giving up. Fat loss is very, very difficult to achieve. It can also be fun, energising and hugely rewarding. You just need the right mindset!

iv. Make time for training. We are willing to open the gym at 4am (if you ask very nicely), and will be with you at any time of day or night. We expect your effort in return. Turn up to your sessions on time, and prioritise your training just for these twelve weeks.
These habits are tough. If they sound too tough, Ultimate Performance may not be the right place for you. If they sound challenging but exciting then you are ready to train with us.
